Mayor's house burnt down in Libya flood protests

The mayor's home in the Libyan city of Derna has been burnt to the ground, as hundreds of protesters demanded answers for last week's catastrophic flood. They gathered on Monday evening at the city's landmark Sahaba Mosque, some crying and chanting for top officials in Libya's eastern government to be sacked. More than 10,000 people are officially missing after two old and dilapidated dams burst, flooding the city. At least 4,000 people have died. The home of Derna's mayor, Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi, has become a focal point for people's anger. Residents say they were not sufficiently warned by officials, who they believe must have known a huge amount of rainfall was coming. Germany's far-right AfD wins first city mayor poll

The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has won its first mayoral election in a city. AfD leader Alice Weidel described the result in Pirna, Saxony, as "historic". Tim Lochner, a former carpenter, won 38.5 per cent after a run-off vote against two right-wing candidates on Sunday. The party's victory is being seen across Germany as a bellwether before key state and local elections next year. The victory also came days after the party in Saxony was officially labelled "extremist" by the country's intelligence services. Powerful earthquake causes damage across Morocco

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing at least 820 people, and causing damage in several areas. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. People died in Marrakesh and several areas to the south, the country's interior ministry said. Many of the victims are believed to be in remote areas. The interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 600 people have been injured.
