Royal Navy rugby player found dead in France

A Royal Navy rugby player has been found dead in France.

The body of sailor Steffan Rees from Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, was discovered on a rocky stretch of coast in Dinard in Brittany, a local prosecutor told the AFP news agency.

Investigators believe the player, whose team is based at the seaside resort for the World Defence Rugby competition, may have died in an accidental fall.

The Royal Navy said it was working with the French authorities.

It said in a statement: "Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and friends.

"We continue to assist the French authorities with their investigations and therefore are unable to comment further."

The competition, also known as the World Military Rugby Championship, brings together military teams from 12 allied nations.

Germany's far-right AfD wins first city mayor poll

The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has won its first mayoral election in a city. AfD leader Alice Weidel described the result in Pirna, Saxony, as "historic". Tim Lochner, a former carpenter, won 38.5 per cent after a run-off vote against two right-wing candidates on Sunday. Powerful earthquake causes damage across Morocco

 A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing at least 820 people, and causing damage in several areas. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. People died in Marrakesh and several areas to the south, the country's interior ministry said. Many of the victims are believed to be in remote areas. The interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 600 people have been injured.
