Woman dies in 'violent incident' in County Offaly

 A woman in her 40s has died in a "violent incident" in County Offaly and a boy has been arrested at the scene Gardaí (Irish police) have said.

Officers were called to a home near Tullamore at about 13:00 local time on Friday where they found the woman's body.

They said the boy was known to the woman and confirmed they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

Several Irish media are reporting the incident was filmed and shared online.

Irish public broadcaster RTÉ is reporting that the victim "sustained severe injuries" at a house in the Rahan area, about 10km (six miles) outside Tullamore.

It said the boy under arrest is 16.

In a statement, a garda spokeswoman said officers were aware that "images from this incident are circulating on social media and messaging apps".

They appealed to anyone who receives these images not to share the content.

Germany's far-right AfD wins first city mayor poll

The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has won its first mayoral election in a city. AfD leader Alice Weidel described the result in Pirna, Saxony, as "historic". Tim Lochner, a former carpenter, won 38.5 per cent after a run-off vote against two right-wing candidates on Sunday. Powerful earthquake causes damage across Morocco

 A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing at least 820 people, and causing damage in several areas. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. People died in Marrakesh and several areas to the south, the country's interior ministry said. Many of the victims are believed to be in remote areas. The interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 600 people have been injured.
