Dozens reportedly killed in Gaza refugee camp

 Dozens of people are reported to have been killed by a huge explosion at Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said at least 50 people were killed and 150 wounded by an Israeli air strike, which it denounced as a "horrific massacre".

Pictures showed people climbing through several large craters and searching for survivors inside wrecked buildings.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has been bombarding Gaza for three weeks.

Earlier, the military said its ground forces were engaged in "fierce battles" with Hamas fighters deep inside the Gaza Strip and had killed dozens of them when it attacked an outpost in the north.

Hamas said its fighters had been using anti-tank missiles and machine-guns against the advancing troops.

Israel has said it is the "second phase" of its war to eliminate Hamas, which began after an unprecedented cross-border attack by gunmen from Gaza on 7 October in which 1,400 people were killed and another 240 taken hostage.

Gaza's health ministry says more than 8,500 people have been killed in the territory since then, while supplies of food, water, fuel and medicine for its 2.2 million residents are dangerously low because of a siege imposed by Israel.

Germany's far-right AfD wins first city mayor poll

The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has won its first mayoral election in a city. AfD leader Alice Weidel described the result in Pirna, Saxony, as "historic". Tim Lochner, a former carpenter, won 38.5 per cent after a run-off vote against two right-wing candidates on Sunday. The party's victory is being seen across Germany as a bellwether before key state and local elections next year. The victory also came days after the party in Saxony was officially labelled "extremist" by the country's intelligence services. Powerful earthquake causes damage across Morocco

 A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing at least 820 people, and causing damage in several areas. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the US Geological Survey said. It struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. People died in Marrakesh and several areas to the south, the country's interior ministry said. Many of the victims are believed to be in remote areas. The interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 600 people have been injured.
